The Institute for Family-Centered Care, a non-profit organization founded in 1992, takes pride in providing essential leadership to advance the understanding and practice of patient- and family-centered care. By promoting collaborative, empowering relationships among patients, families, and health care professionals, the Institute facilitates patient- and family-centered change in all settings where individuals and families receive care and support.

The Institute also serves as a central resource for policy makers, administrators, program planners, direct service providers, educators, design professionals, and patient and family leaders.

Our Mission: In partnership with patients, families, and health care professionals from many disciplines, the Institute for Family-Centered Care promotes the understanding and practice of patient- and family-centered care. The Institute seeks to ensure that principles of patient- and family-centered care are reflected in all systems providing care and support to individuals and families including health, education, mental health, and social services.

The Institute accomplishes its mission through consultation, training, and technical assistance; materials development and information dissemination; and research and public policy initiatives.

Our Vision: We at the Institute envision a profound change in the way health care is provided to individuals and their families in North America. In every encounter, health and human service professionals will seek to build on the strengths of patients and families, enhancing their confidence and competence. The health care delivery system will recognize and encourage patient and family strengths, choice, and independence.
