Recruiting Patient and Family Faculty
No matter the setting or the individual program requirements, certain personal characteristics should be considered in recruitment efforts. For example, while formal education, prior teaching and public speaking experience are a plus, these experiences are not as important in family faculty members as are the abilities to develop rapport with people and to communicate personal experiences constructively and with feeling. Personal characteristics that are generally helpful in family faculty members include the following:
- Excellent communication skills.
- An ability to share personal experiences in a way that others may learn from them.
- The ability to see the "big picture," to see beyond one’s personal experience.
- An ability to listen to others.
- Concern about more than one issue.
- Sensitivity to the needs of others.
- Superb listening skills.
