Reinventing Family Policy:
Vice President Gore welcomes innovative ideas for serving America's families
As part of the process of developing the report on reinventing government, Vice President Albert Gore, Jr. met with an extraordinary national gathering of community leaders, social service providers, policy experts, and family members in Nashville, Tennessee, to explore innovative ways to better serve the needs of American families. The conference, "Family Reunion II: Reinventing Family Policy," sponsored by the Progressive Foundation, featured roundtable discussions with nearly 50 national experts, policy makers, grass-roots service providers, and families who addressed a variety of family policy issues and issues related to family-centered care.
Moderated by the Vice President, these discussions highlighted a wide array of ideas and programs that are demonstrating creative new ways for local and state service systems to effectively listen to and empower families, transcend barriers between professionals and families, and provide incentives for and measurement of success. In his opening remarks, the Vice President said, "Families need the opportunity to take responsibility for themselves. Programs should emphasize prevention, not crisis management. Programs should be cooperative, integrated across the boundaries of professional turf and human misunderstanding. Services should be family-friendly; that is, readily accessible and community-based."
The remaining articles in this issue feature some of the most exciting programs presented at the conference, relating particularly to critical issues in family-centered care: the importance of building partnerships with families, the role of women, and making service systems work across agency lines.
