The federal document, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), is the first national legislation to focus on protecting the privacy of patient information. As HIPAA is implemented, however, some perceive it to hinder patient and family member access to and participation in information sharing, charting, and documentation; thus putting up a barrier to patient- and family-centered care.
